Two New Switch Variations to be Announced by Fall

A console for every occasion.

A report from the Wall Street Journal claims that Japanese video game giant Nintendo is planning to release a variation of their Switch console later this year, perhaps even two.

According to the report, the new Switch will feature various tweaks and improvements, more of an optional upgrade than an outright replacement. There might also be two different variants released: one for “casual” gamers, and another for more serious “avid” gamers.

WSJ sources say that the “casual” console will be a cheaper option, and is seen by Nintendo more as a successor to its “aging hand-held 3DS device.” This cheaper version will also drop some functions and features, such as the controllers’ HD rumble feature, in order to cut costs. As for the more “serious” console, it will apparently have “enhanced features,” though WSJ says that it still won’t be as powerful as Sony’s PS4 Pro or Microsoft’s Xbox One X.

The WSJ reports that the new Switch consoles will be announced at E3 in June and will possibly be released in the latter part of 2019, just in time for Christmas, as well as the release of Pokemon Sword & Shield and the as-of-yet-unsubtitled Animal Crossing.
