Sony Releasing Colored PS5 Plates

If you actually have a PS5, you can make it pretty!

Earlier this year, Sony got into a legal kerfuffle with Dbrand, a third-party company that manufactures alternate face plates for PlayStation 5 consoles. Sony sent Dbrand a cease and desist on the grounds of infringing on their hardware copyrights, though many suspected the actual motivation in that C&D was Sony trying to shut down competition ahead of their own plate release. It took some time for Sony to iron out the patent for their swappable cover plates, but it seems they’ve finally put it together.

Today, Sony announced that after a year since the PS5’s launch, the console is getting a hardware tweak in the form of swappable colored plates. These plates will come in five colors: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, Cosmic Red, and Midnight Black. According to Sony, the plates are very easy to use. You can just pop your standard PS5 plate right off and snap in a different one as your mood determines. These plates will be releasing some time in January 2022 for $55 a pop. The colors won’t all be releasing at once; only black and red will be available to start, with the other three colors coming over the course of 2022.

In addition to the plates, Sony also announced several new colors of DualSense controller, the same colors as the plates. Red and Black DualSense controllers were already available, but Pink, Blue, and Purple controllers will be releasing in a similar timeframe to the console plates.
