Sony Planning Studio Acquisitions for Next PlayStation

Microsoft is gearing up for the next generation of consoles with a slew of video game development studio acquisitions, and it looks like Sony may be following suit.

Microsoft has acquired a ton of video game studios this year, such as Playground Games, InXile, Undead Labs, Complusion Games, Ninja Theory, and last but not least, Obsidian Entertainment. Microsoft is even starting up another triple AAA video game development studio known as “The Initiative.” Exclusive titles matter to a lot of gamers and it would seem that Microsoft plans on having plenty of exclusives on offer once they launch their next-generation console. If PlayStation wants to keep up, then they will have to do the same. And it looks like they are.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has put up two new job postings, one for a Senior Manager of Corporate Development, and one for a Director of Corporate Development. In the job description of both job postings is the following:

“SIE’s Corporate Development Team works closely with SIE’s management team and is responsible for identifying inorganic growth opportunities through acquisitions, investments or joint ventures.”

PlayStation is pretty far behind in the acquisition game, but better a late start than not at all. It’ll be interesting to see what game studios Sony has its eye on.
