We all saw the update where Snapchat made everything harder to navigate. The streaks icon was moved and made smaller, stories were swapped from a singular page to being integrated with your chat logs. Everything they did seemed counter-intuitive to a functional user face. Now, there’s statistical proof that the redesign has hurt Snapchat’s number of user, as the number is on the decline.
3 million users have become inactive after the redesign, and with more and more social media platforms incorporating the feature of “stories” on their platform, it’s very possible that Snapchat is becoming increasingly more irrelevant. Facebook and Instagram now offer the same options, but Instagram’s features seem to be drawing the most popularity. With the option to mention others, let other users respond to ask questions, and stickers that offer more specific location tagging, Instagram may soon take the lead.
Our entire office has done the whole “Snapchat vs. Instagram” debate, and most of the people asked said they prefer Instagram. Why? They’ve incorporated both the short-lived “story” feature with long-lasting posts. It’s essentially become a combination of the best parts of Facebook and Snapchat in one place, which is why its drawing more users nowadays.
While most of us will continue to keep our streaks alive, we’ll be posting less and less to Snapchat and focus more on Instagram instead.
