‘Prince of Persia’ Remake Delayed to March

There’s a pun about time in here somewhere.

2003’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one of Ubisoft’s most fondly remembered games. It had a cool, mythical theme, a (mostly) likeable protagonist, and was one of the first post-2000 games to make extensive use of time-manipulation mechanics. It was also a surprisingly good attempt at a revival of a series that had been laying dormant at the time, with the original Prince of Persia game having been released all the way back in 1989. You can actually still buy the original Sands of Time on Steam, though its old sensibilities and outdated controller mapping make the experience a smidge clunky. Luckily, Ubisoft announced back in September that the game would be receiving the coveted remake treatment, though it seems we’re going to need to wait a little longer to step into the shoes of the time-bending Prince again.

The Sands of Time remake was originally slated for a release in January of 2021, but due to ongoing kerfuffles at Ubisoft related to the COVID-19 pandemic, development has been slowed to the point that the game has been delayed. According to an announcement posted on the game’s official Twitter, the game is now planned for release on March 18, 2021. No changes have been made to the planned release platforms; the game will still be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC (though whether through UPlay, Steam, or both, we don’t know).

“2020 was a year like no other,” the announcement read. “Today we would like to inform you that we need more time to complete the game. With that, the release date of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been moved to March 18, 2021. We believe this is the right decision to ensure we deliver a game you enjoy.”

“Thank you for your patience and continued support of the Prince of Persia, and we hope you remain safe and healthy during this holiday season.”
