Nintendo fans, brace yourselves — the gaming giant just announced that prices for its beloved Nintendo Switch lineup are going up. Starting August 3, the original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and a range of accessories will all see a price increase due to what the company calls “market conditions.”
While that phrase may sound vague, many industry watchers suspect it’s related to the latest round of tariffs announced by former President Donald Trump. These new reciprocal tariffs aren’t just targeting China — they now extend to Vietnam, where Nintendo had previously shifted much of its console production to avoid earlier tariff troubles.
What makes this move especially interesting is its timing. Just hours before the price hike announcement, Nintendo shared its quarterly earnings and revealed that the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 has already sold an impressive 5.82 million units since launching on June 5.
Though the Switch 2’s price remains steady at $450 for now, Nintendo isn’t ruling out future changes. In a statement, the company said that while prices for Switch 2 hardware, games, and online memberships will stay the same “at this time,” they may need to be adjusted down the road.
So, what does this mean for gamers? If you’ve been on the fence about picking up a Switch or grabbing extra accessories, now might be the time to act. The current price for the standard Switch is $299.99 and $349.99 for the OLED version, but those numbers could climb very soon.
Nintendo fans are no strangers to market surprises — but this one’s a reminder that even our favorite consoles aren’t immune to global economic shifts.
