New App Can Identify Bacteria On Smartphone

Want to know what kind of bacteria you have? There’s an app for that. No, seriously. A new application for your smart phone that comes from developers at UC Santa Barbra, and could change the way us non-scientists look at the micro bacterial world. Introducing the new smaRT-LAMP kit. This field kit includes all of the materials needed to pair your phone to your micro testing site in order to identify diseases at a near-clinical level.

In the lab kit are LED lights, a hot plate, a low force mini centrifuge, and a cardboard box. So how do all of these things help recognize different bacterias? First, you will use your smartphone’s camera to analyze a collection of either blood, feces, or urine. It compares the results to a fluorescent mixture which will react based on positive or negative results.

This app is a game changer for those parts of the area who do not have access to basic healthcare options. It will become a new way for regular citizens with access to a phone to identify issues in their own home, rather than always needing to visit a healthcare professional. The bacteria with the highest success right for identification now are Urinary Tract Infections.
