How to Help With Hurricane Dorian’s Aftermath

Credit: The Washington Post

Hurricane Dorian will go down as one of the most devastating hurricanes of all time.

The hurricane completely destroyed the Bahamas with 20 reported fatalities at writing and thousands of homes destroyed. Communities have been wiped out and people are in need of help… desperately. People always seem to step up in charitable moments and there is no better time than now to help out.

Experts say that monetary donations are more important at the onset of a disaster rather than physical items. If you would prefer to donate goods, check with the lists that organizations are posting. Nobody wants to see any supplies go to waste. But there are several organizations that you can check out and see what you can do to help.

BahamaStrong: Set up by the city of Miami to collect supplies for affected areas of the Bahamas.

National Association of the Bahamas: Nonprofit organization that is collecting donations and supplies. They also list locations to drop off water bottles, non-perishable food, clothes, and basic toiletries.

Operation Helping Hands: Works alongside the United Way to help in the immediate and long-term needs of victims of Hurricane Dorian. You can donate on this website as well.

Bahamas Red Cross: One of the most trusted organizations to help out in times of need. Donation of goods and money can be accepted here.

It is advised to do your research before trying to help out. Unfortunately, people try to take advantage of tough situations by scamming people. These websites above can all be trusted. Try to avoid donating to the “middleman” and just go right to the source. It is also essential that if you are donating money that you know exactly how it is going to be used.

If you do run into a person or company that is running a scam, you should contact your state’s Attorney General’s office immediately.
