Sony has announced that the price of its popular PlayStation 5 console will be going up in the United States starting Thursday, August 21. The company explained that the decision comes in response to a “challenging economic environment,” a reference many believe points directly to the latest tariffs on imported goods.

Gamers in the U.S. can expect to see the following updated prices:

  • PlayStation 5: $549.99

  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: $499.99

  • PlayStation 5 Pro: $749.99

That’s an increase of about $50 across the lineup. Importantly, Sony has confirmed that prices for accessories such as controllers and headsets will remain the same, and the adjustment applies only to U.S. consoles.

This move follows similar pricing changes Sony made in other parts of the world earlier this year. Back in April, players in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand saw console prices rise due to the same global pressures. U.S. gamers, however, had been spared until now.

Sony isn’t alone in making these adjustments. Microsoft recently shared that it too will increase console prices by $80–$100, and will raise the cost of some games and accessories. Nintendo, meanwhile, decided to keep the console price steady for its upcoming Switch 2 but made slight increases to the cost of select accessories.

While higher prices are never the news gamers hope for, Sony emphasized that it remains committed to delivering cutting-edge technology and unforgettable gaming experiences to its community. The company noted that no changes are planned for markets outside the U.S. at this time.
