Video Games May Be Causing China’s Eye Problem

China is facing a huge problem right now, and contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with its current trade wars with the US. In fact, China’s problem is more about health than anything: the country is now facing an increasing eyesight problem that may be linked to video games.

According to SkyNews, in the effort to dominate the eSports industry, more and more Chinese ‘video game schools’ have been sprouting up, urging teens and young adults to spend more time playing games.

One interviewee shares his personal view about the matter. “Now [that] eSports has been recognized in the world, there will be more job opportunities in the future.”

While this may have improved their chances at winning in eSports, it has also caused an upward spike in sight loss among its younger generation. Currently, there is a rise of short-sightedness and near-sightedness cases in China. It is predicted that by 2020, half of China will have myopia.

Yao Jinglei, an ophthalmologist, points out that the younger generation has started spending more time indoors and playing more video games. Parents are now recommended to limit their children’s screentime to minimize potential damages.
