Unfollow: The Social Media Purge

We’re focusing on mental health today. I know it can be a touchy subject, but it’s super important that everyone understands the importance of putting yourself and your brain first. If emotionally, your wellbeing is not in tact, it can have serious affects on your physical health.

But what does that have to do with technology? Think about what we spend our days doing mostly: looking at our phones. We are constantly on social media looking at what other people are doing and comparing their lives to ours. It gets to a point of unhealthiness, and the best thing you can do to relieve stress and anger is to do a “social media purge.”

That’s right. Take that friend list down from 500 to 50, and focus on those who actually matter in your life. Here are just a few examples of people you should block, mute, or remove from these platforms, thanks to Cosmopolitan and a study done by Indiana University.

The first are the people who over post. All day, every day, they clog up your feed. It is shown that those who spend the most time on social media are actually the ones who have trouble dealing with their emotions and feelings. The make up for this lack of a skill by over-indulging in posts to find engagements that aren’t necessarily there.

Also, unfollow the narcissists. The ones who post the same selfies every day and only write about themselves. Social media is meant to be a place to bring others together, and narcissists do anything but that. Most social media sites have been called a “self-reinforcing spiral” because it gives people a platform to think they’re the center of everyone’s world and encourages them to continue acting that way.

Lastly, get rid of the beef. Anyone you’ve had drama with in the past, people you’ve ended on bad terms with, and especially your ex. You don’t need people starting drama with you on your friends list. In short, get rid of those who are not worthy of a place on your feed.
