These days, many of our personal as well as professional lives are dependent on the online world or the internet in general. The times when the internet was accessible only through a cable and was used only on large desktop PCs are over, today, people have an internet connection everywhere they go. You will find that at least 50% of all jobs require the employee to spend at least some time online, and if you are a student then you probably spends your time on the internet searching for research topics, information for assignments or simply for using Facebook, Twitter or any other of the social media websites.

However, even though the internet does provide us with a lot of help and entertainment all at the same time, it is also something which can become a great threat. This is of course because with the rise in the new aspects of network connectivity, people connect their mobile phones and other personal gadgets and this makes them a possible victim for cyber crime of any kind. Now even though a lot of people are aware of the security threats that these open devices propose, only a very few people take the necessary steps to keep their personal information safe.

If you are use your internet connection through your mobile or tablet, you should know that is better to be proactive than to react when you have lost or compromised your valuable information. Although there are a thousand tips that can help you to stay secure when you are online, there are a few basic ones which I’d like to mention in this particular article.

  • First and foremost, you have to ensure that the operating system you are using on your mobile, laptop or tablet is updated and original. Along with this, you will also need a proper licensed and updated version of an antivirus or any other security software. As an average computer user, you may not see the need of regular updates, but the truth is that these updates will go a long way to help you stay safe and secure.

  • One of the most important things is to have unique and strong passwords for your online accounts, all of them. This means that your multiple e-mail accounts, along with your social media website password need to be different from each other. This is suggested because if you have the same password for everything, you run a higher risk of getting everything hacked all at once which is a great risk.

  • It is also very important that you practice caution when you are connecting to a public WIFI somewhere. In fact, a lot of experts say that you should completely avoid WIFIs that are available at airports or cafes as these are most susceptible to hackers and scammers of all kinds.

  • Another big mistake that you can see a lot of teenagers make these days is that of accepting every friend request that comes their way. You need to remember that a lot of these people are only trying to get to your pictures and other sensitive information and so you should only accept friend requests that you know from outside the social media website or internet.

So you see, just following a couple of tips will ensure that you stay far away from any online threats so that you can lead a safe and secure online presence.
