Saluting The Dreamcast

Looking back on getting a Sega Dreamcast

Ahh poor Dreamcast you really did die far to soon didn’t you? Like many gamers I have a great deal of love for the Sega Dreamcast. Its not just purely nostalgia either the console was great. And it did have a really cool library of video games. I was very excited for the Dreamcast in the year leading up to the launch here in the UK I could not have been any more excited. Despite me paying for the damn thing and saving for ages. My younger brother got involved and was just as excited. Anyway I saved and saved, but I decided to hold off and wait a few months after the launch to pick one up so we could get more games at the same time I got my system. Also I was hopeful I could get a couple of the games I wanted a couple of bucks cheaper.

Anyway it was a Saturday morning I jumped in the car along with my brother. For some reason our old man wanted to tag along with us. Which was a great start to the day as my brother was complaining about having to sit in the back. Anyway I drove to town and we had decide that along with the console we were getting a extra controller, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Power Stone and Marvel vs Capcom. I decided to get an extra controller instead of a VMU so that I my brother could also play. And I would get a VMU the next week. Anyway we get into the store and I gather up the stuff that I wanted and put it on the counter. I told the guy I also wanted the Dreamcast console. He went back and grabbed one and started scanning the stuff. He then commented on the fact that I had all this stuff, but no VMU. I explained my situation and then my old man told the guy to get one of the VMU’s as well and he would pay for it. So as it turns out it worked out well that he crashed our trip.

Over all I had a great year of playing on my Dreamcast I think that it had some great games. Zombie Revenge, Hydro Thunder, Dynamite Cop, Sonic Adventure 2, House of the Dead just to name a few kept me and my brother busy. Sadly I feel that it could never escape that big black shod of the Playstation 2. I must admit as much as I loved my Dreamcast when all the news and videos started to come out showcasing the Playstation 2 my head was certainly turned by the noise that Sony was making with there Playstation 2. I really think that the Dreamcast never had a chance in hell of succeeding. For me personally and I know everyone has there theories as to why it died like it did, but I think the biggest problem was the lack of the DVD player. I know that here in the UK some stores were even offering a bundle where you would buy a Dreamcast and get a DVD player with it as well, but it was to little to late. While it had a short life I still think that the Dreamcast is worthy of a good place in video game history.
