Sony Will Not Attend E3 2019

For the first time since the premier trade event began 24 years ago, video game titan Sony Interactive Entertainment will not be attending E3.

Given that E3 is the biggest gaming event of any given year, many fans were shocked to hear the news. According to Sony, the industry is changing, and as such, Sony will be changing their ways on connecting with and engaging their community. It seems like Sony will be looking into reinventing the wheel, but as of now, they have not released any details of their plans on how to do so. However, there are some theories going around that attempts to decode any other ulterior reasoning that Sony may have for their 2019 E3 absence.

The most interesting of these theories comes in two parts: One, is that Sony is skipping out on E3 next year because they have nothing major planned next year. This is more than a possibility. There are some pretty heavy hitters, like the greatly-anticipated ‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ and ‘Days Gone’ coming to PS4 in early 2019, but these titles will be released before E3 2019. Looking at the current release schedule, there isn’t much on the calendar. And that leads to the second part of this theory: PS4 is on the way out, and Sony is focusing on PS5.

When you add the two parts together, it makes sense. PS4 is about to be put out to pasture, so there’s no reason to make more exclusives for the console. And since Sony will have no major PS4 releases to tease at E3 next year, and the PS5 will presumably not be ready, why attend the event at all? Better to be a no-show and generate buzz and speculation, then show up and underwhelm right?
