Sonic Movie Pushed Back to 2020

Slow and steady wins the race. Probably.

In case you forgot (though if you’ve seen it, I don’t know how you would), the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that dropped last month drew heavy fan ire for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest reasons was Sonic’s design, what with his weird fingers and human teeth and- oof, let’s stop talking about it.

After the outcry, the director of the film, Jeff Fowler, promised that Sonic’s appearance would be overhauled in time for the planned release in November. However, that in itself was met with some backlash, since the small time frame would more than likely result in a crunch period for the film’s animators, a topic which is hotly debated in gaming and tech spheres right now.

Fowler announced on his Twitter that the film is officially being pushed back to next year, specifically February 14th. The tweet read “Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right.” This was followed by a long hashtag reading “#novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie,” likely in reference to the crunch concerns.

Fan response has mostly evened out, with many content with the period of time now being allotted to the animation team. There has, however, been some new joking in reference to the fact that the film will be coming out on Valentine’s Day, but that’s the internet for you.
