Snapchat Creates Virtual Museum To Celebrate Black History Month

Snapchat shows off its technological prowess along with its support for the Black History Month with a new immersive lens that lets its users explore a virtual museum filled with works from Black millennial artists.

The gallery is called “For Us, By Us: Art Through the Eyes of Black Millennials” and features different creations from young rising artists including Gianni Lee, Paracosm, Bianca Pastel, Jameel Mohammed, and Jessica Spence. The project is in courtesy of an all black employee group in Snap Inc. called ‘Snap Noir’.

To access the gallery, just open your Snapchat app and find the rainbow-colored lens on the Snapchat Lens Carousel. Using the camera in selfie mode allows users to take a selfie that shows the Black History Month banner. Meanwhile, flipping the camera instantly transports users to the virtual gallery, allowing them to ‘walk’ around in order to view all the different artworks. Users can even walk closer to each artwork and examine the title and name of the artist, as well as admire the artworks more closely. The soundtrack comes from rising musician and rapper Ivy Sole who just released her first album last year in September.

The gallery can be accessed until February 28.
