Smart Assistive Driving Tech for Truck Drivers

Now that’s what I call a great, big convoy.

Self-driving cars are already on the horizon, but there are also other ways that people can use this new technology and not be removed from the driving process altogether.

Peloton Technology is taking a big step in the right direction of keeping drivers behind the wheel while still taking advantage of self-driving tech. They introduced Level 4 automation technology that allowed one human driver to control multiple trucks at the same time.

This is made possible by using vehicle-to-vehicle communication and radar-based active braking systems. The vehicle-control algorithms allow one artificial intelligence-driven truck to follow another human-driven vehicle. The A.I. driven truck mimics the same movements as the human driver ahead. In this way, more goods can be transported and there will be greater safety and fuel economy on the roads.

One driver could theoretically manage an entire convoy of trucks with this tech. It’s a much more simplistic way of utilizing autonomous driving because it doesn’t have to anticipate changing conditions ahead. Instead, it monitors what the truck ahead of it is doing and, keeping a safe distance behind, performs the same movements and reactions.

Testing of this system is currently ongoing with no current projected release date. Peloton is working to make sure that the technology is maturing and can be deployed in commercial operations on routes where driver shortage can make the biggest impact.
