Say Good-Bye to Root Canals?

If it means keeping that drill out of my mouth, I’m all for it.

The pain and expense of having a root canal done is something most of us dread. We certainly want to do everything in our power to make that pain go away but know it’s about to hit our pockets pretty hard. But fear not, there may be a future solution! Tel Aviv scientists are working on new Nano fillings that could make root canals obsolete.

With sugar and hard candy easily accessible, our cavity levels have skyrocketed over the years. We would have a filling done and hope that we were good to go from there. However, secondary tooth decay began to build up underneath the filling. This eventually leads to pain and an expensive root canal.

So, the scientists have begun working on a new composite antibacterial material that could be used as part of the fillings process. Essentially, the bacteria that love to hang around our rotting teeth would be repelled by the material. It won’t kill these germs, but it will make it far less appealing for them and send them away. This would, ideally, keep them away for the rest of your life span.

The trials right now are being done on animals, but it is expected that they will be able to perform trials on humans in a year or two. The material used will fit in nicely with your teeth and won’t stick out as something really odd. This would be a very affordable option for patients and will keep their teeth pain free and, more importantly, free from root canals. This procedure, if proven viable, could revolutionize the dentistry world forever.
