Samsung Explosion Raises Controversy

A Samsung phone exploded in a man’s pocket at an Indonesian restaurant, raising more concerns over Samsung phones and their instability and potential to overheat.

The model of the phone was a Samsung Grand Duos, a phone capable of holding two SIM cards and allowing the user to have two phone numbers stored on the same device. The model was first released in 2013 and has never been reported to blow up.

Recently, the Samsung Note 7 was the topic of controversy for exploding and catching fire. The notorious phone was banned from airplanes due to the hazard it caused. Jo Semidang, Corporate Marketing Director of Samsung Electronics Indonesia, said in a statement that they will be investigating the incident, as consumer safety is “their number one priority.”

Luckily, the man in the video footage above was not harmed. The phone did, however, melt a hole in the pocket of his shirt, causing a mini fire in the diner he was sitting at. Bystanders were sent scattering, and Indonesian police are now involved as well.
