Riot Announces Multiple New Game Projects

Ten years is quite a while to spend on one game. Time to mix it up.

I’ve always appreciated the dense lore of League of Legends and its characters, and welcome attempts to do new things with it. Apparently, Riot does as well. Like, a lot.

During a presentation on Tuesday commemorating League of Legends‘ 10th anniversary, Riot unveiled a cavalcade of new projects, some original, some League-adjacent.

  • League‘s auto-battler, Teamfight Tactics, is releasing as a standalone app for mobile devices.
  • League is getting its own card game spin-off (because, as with Teamfight, Riot is not one to let Valve steal pies off their windowsill). Legends of Runeterra will be releasing some time in 2020 for PC and mobile devices.
  • League of Legends: Wild Rift is a re-tooled version of League built from the ground up for mobile devices and consoles with emphasis on shorter, snappier matches.
  • Riot is producing a new CG animated series titled Arcane, which will be coming out some time in 2020. No major details beyond a trailer yet.
  • Project A is Riot’s first brand new project, and is supposedly a character-based tactical shooter for PC, likely in a similar vein to Overwatch.
  • Project L, the second new project, is a fighting game utilizing League characters, though we currently know next to nothing beyond that.
  • The third and final new project, Project F, is so early in its development, we don’t even know what kind of game it’ll be yet. Riot has said, however, that it “explores the possibilities of traversing the world of Runeterra with your friends.” So maybe an MMO set in League‘s universe, then?
