Piranha Plant Joins ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Roster

On Tuesday, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received its version 2.0 content update, featuring improvements to the game and character re-balancing. However, in a surprise move, Nintendo also released the game’s first DLC character, the Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series. Piranha Plant was announced during a previous presentation, but a concrete release date for the character was not provided beyond a vague inkling that it would be some time in February. Well, January 29th is basically February, right?

Those who purchased the game when it first came out were given codes for a free download of Piranha Plant. Owners of physical copies were required to register their copies, while digital copy owners were registered automatically. If you registered, you should have received your redemption code a few weeks ago, and Piranha Plant should’ve downloaded automatically with the 2.0 update. If you didn’t register or purchased the game after the redemption period, then unfortunately, you’re going to have to cough up an additional $4.99. That’s separate from the Fighter’s Pass, by the way, so you still have to pay even if you bought it.

Also, a word of caution: several players have reported that using Piranha Plant in the game’s Century Smash modes (Cruel Smash, All-Star, etc.) have caused save data corruption. Piranha Plant should be safe to use in the rest of the game, though, so just stay out of Century Smash until this is definitively remedied.
