No More Getting Your Appendix Removed

Appendicitis is one of those weird “ailments” (if we can even call it that) which affects only a certain population of people and is treated in a very extreme manner. Ever since we grew up, we always were told that if we felt pain where our appendix was supposed to be, it was bound to burst and we needed to get it removed.

Science has discovered that’s not true anymore. A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association says that antibiotics could be the future key in treating appendicitis. This alternative would prevent the need for immediate surgery when symptoms show up, a huge plus for those who don’t want to go under the knife.

About two-thirds of patients with appendicitis do not have to fear surgery, for the antibiotic should suppress the issue indefinitely. Only 7 percent of patients in this trial reported that they had complications with the antibiotics, while 64 percent said they didn’t have to worry once they were on the treatment.

The one downside is that 36 percent of the patients who tried the antibiotics still had to get their appendix removed. This could be due to early stages of testing in the medical field, or the fear that the appendicitis might come back. Despite this antibiotic being a safe alternative, some patiences may still opt for removal in fear that the pain returns.
