Nintendo Switch Lite: Smaller, Cheaper, and More Portable

Switch too expensive for you? Try the diet version.

The Switch can already be used as a handheld console, but Nintendo is upping the ante with a smaller, more portable (not to mention cheaper) version.

Priced at just under $200, the Nintendo Switch Lite is about $100 cheaper than the original console. To compensate for its portability, users will not be able to connect to a television screen for docked play and the Joy Cons on the sides can’t be removed. There’s also no kickstand, but since you can’t take the Joy Cons off anyway, that doesn’t really matter.

In terms of size, the Nintendo Switch Lite is about an inch smaller than the original and a little bit lighter. The screen is about an inch smaller, too, but the resolution is about the same. A battery life of 3-7 hours can be expected on a single charge.

Design-wise, users can get the console in bright yellow, turquoise, and gray. A special edition Pokemon version will come out in early November, just before Pokemon Sword and Shield hit the shelves.

The Lite’s Joy Cons feature a full directional pad as opposed to the separated directional buttons on the original Switch.

The Switch Lite will be releasing on September 20, 2019. If you don’t have a Switch yet and can’t take the full hit to your wallet, the Lite may be a promising alternative.
