Myspace Apologizes For Losing 12 Years Worth of Content

Music and photos from years past have been wiped from the web.

Myspace, a social networking platform similar to Facebook that was popular around 2005, has sent out an official message apologizing for losing 12 years worth of content apparently due to a server migration error.

The message states: “As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

The loss includes any data from the year it was funded, 2003, up to 2015. It also includes about 50 million songs from different artists who used the site to upload and stream music.

While Myspace is no longer as popular as it once was, having been overtaken by other more popular platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, many still seem to be affected by the loss.

One Twitter user, @AliciaTheRabbit says, “This is funny for some, but to me it is devastating. My father was tragically murdered around 12 years ago, before Facebook was really a popular thing. He instead had a MySpace, and keeping it alive in his memory meant everything to me. I’m devastated by the loss of his memories.”

Some, on the other hand, are not so understanding. Blogger Andy Baio tweets, “I’m deeply skeptical this was an accident. Flagrant incompetence may be bad PR, but it still sounds better than ‘we can’t be bothered with the effort and cost of migrating and hosting 50 million old MP3s.'”

Myspace used to employ more than 1600 people back in 2009, when it was still fairly popular. 10 years later, it now has around 150 employees.
