‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Beta Set for March

Man, I still can’t do a Fatality in a Mortal Kombat game without checking the move list first, and that’s in the games that even have a move list. Mortal Kombat 11, the sequel to 2015’s Mortal Kombat X, was announced last month for Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC, and a special community event was announced alongside it that would reveal more about the game. That event was yesterday, and we’ve picked up a bunch of fun new tidbits.

First and foremost, Netherrealm Studios announced that they will be hosting an open beta for the game on March 28th, 2019. It wasn’t specified how long the beta period will last, but it will give players the chance to tinker with the mechanics and a handful of characters. Of important note, however, is that only Xbox One and PS4 players will be allowed to participate in the beta, and of them, only those who have pre-ordered the game. If you’re getting the Switch or PC versions, you’re out of luck. But hey, if you want an incentive to pre-order, you get a free unlock of Shao Khan, so that’s fun.

Speaking of characters, in an additional announcement at the community event, Netherrealm revealed that series mainstay Sonya Blade will be voiced by WWE Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. Rumors had been circulating on this for a while now, and the woman herself has appeared to confirm that not only will she portray Sonya, but that she is a longtime fan of Sonya and the series, much to many fans’ delight.

Mortal Kombat 11 will release on April 23rd, 2019. Get a poncho if you’re sitting in the splash zone.
