James Wan and Greg Russo to Revive ‘Resident Evil’ Film Series

Fans of ‘Resident Evil’ rejoice; director James Wan and screenwriter Greg Russo will be bringing horror back to the forefront in a Resident Evil movie reboot.

The ‘Resident Evil’ franchise is one of the most endearing in all of gaming. It is so popular, that it spawned a movie franchise, one of the few game-based movie franchises to enjoy a healthy amount of success and numerous sequels.

However, despite the commercial success of the ‘Resident Evil’ movies, fans of the series weren’t overly thrilled about them. Instead of placing emphasis on horror, tension, and atmosphere, the films were mostly just action movies with the ‘Resident Evil’ world used as a backdrop. This is an attribute that the film series shares with some of the more recent entries into the video game series.

It has been announced that Australian film director, producer, and screenwriter James Wan will be producing a reboot of the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise. Having produced, written, and/or directed horror films such as ‘Saw,’ ‘Insidious,’ and both ‘Conjuring’ films, Wan knows his way around the horror genre.

Joining Wan is screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also the screenwriter for New Line Cinema’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ reboot. Russo has made some comments on plans for the reboot, and they were exactly what fans wanted to hear; the reboot will be taking the series back to its horror roots.

Specific details on the reboot, such as release date and cast, have yet to be disclosed. It probably won’t see the light of day until at least 2020, but if this reboot can do for the film series what ‘Resident Evil 7’ did for the game series, this will be something to look forward to.
