ISS Hole Allegedly Drilled from Inside

A couple of weeks ago, several astro- and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station performed a lengthy space walk procedure in order to investigate a bizarre hole in the station’s hull that had been discovered back in August. The hole was only 2 millimeters wide, and has since been filled with epoxy. NASA has clarified that the crew was never in any danger from the hole, but its origins are still a mystery.

According to Sergei Prokopyev, one of the cosmonauts who was on the spacewalk and studied the hole, believes that the hole may have been made from inside the capsule. It has been commonly accepted at this point that the hole was a product of a human hand holding a power drill. However, nobody was able to determine whether the hole was a manufacturing accident made planetside or an act of, in the words of Russian authorities, “deliberate spoilage.” Theories are circulating that the drill hole shown in pictures bears signs of odd pressure and “wandering” from the central hole. This could indicate that the hole was made in a microgravity setting, where operating a drill is far more difficult; in other words, the hole may have been made from inside the capsule while already in orbit.

There’s no official confirmation of Prokopyev’s comments as of yet.
