Is Sony Preparing to Announce Its New Console?

The cycle of console hype turns eternal.

Sony may be preparing to announce the next iteration of the PlayStation console series, according to media reports and Sony’s own statements. After all, Sony is already talking about the PlayStation 4’s successor, hinting that the PlayStation 5 may already be in development. In fact, it may be announced sooner than gamers think: later this year. It may also be released next year in 2020.

Analyst Michael Pachter says, “I think that’s exactly when you’ll see one (PS5) 2019 or 2020, and if I had to bet, it’s 2020. Sony’s making so much money with the PS4 that I think they’ll continue to milk it as long as they can milk it.”

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has already reached 90 million units worldwide, ranking it at the highest spot out of all the gaming consoles in the market right now. Jason Schreier from Kotaku mirrors Pachter’s thoughts, saying, “there is information about the PlayStation 5 floating around at both first and third-party companies, but it’s far more limited than it would be if the console’s release was imminent.”

But John Kodera from Sony says, “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future.”

As of now, there are no final confirmations from the company yet, but this won’t stop us from keeping our fingers crossed anyway.
