iPhone Users Targeted by New Phishing Scam

Jody Westby, CEO of security consulting firm Global Cyber Risk LLC, was the attempted victim of this new scam recently. Westby received a call claiming that numerous Apple servers with Apple ID information had been compromised. The automated call then went on to tell Westby that she needed to call a 1-866 number before using her phone. Suspicious, Westby contacted Apple support, who informed her that this was definitely a scam call.

It’s a troubling new scam for a number of reasons. This scam phone number also called Westby a day prior, and both times, her phone displayed the genuine Apple support phone number, street address, and a web address. The web address was missing the ‘s’ in the ‘https’ which gave away that it was a scam, however most people would certainly not notice this.

Worse, these scammers were able to fool Westby’s iPhone, as it couldn’t tell the difference between the fake calls, and a real call from Apple Support. On top of that, iPhones are genuinely having issues with Apple IDs at the moment. Users are reporting being booted out of their Apple IDs and then locked out for undisclosed security reasons. If this phishing scam were to happen to someone experiencing this issue, they could very easily fall victim to this scam.

Data breaches, hacks, and phishing are becoming more and more prevalent, so be sure to always take extra precautions when online or with any of your smart devices.
