IKEA Now Has Mobile Shopping

Thinking of starting a strict budgeting habit this year? Well, here’s a new app to ruin all your plans. IKEA has just introduced its mobile shopping feature, an innovative effort by the Swedish company to keep up with the world’s growing dependence on the Internet.

In an interview with Reuters, chief digital officer Barbara Martin Coppola says, “It is a completely new experience. The app is combined with the store experience, with the online experience.”

Although it was way back in 2017 that IKEA first launched its app, it didn’t use to have a shopping feature. Before this new update, interested shoppers could load the app and access IKEA’s online catalog to ‘window shop’ for products they’re interested in, but to actually buy the product, they’d have to drive first to the nearest IKEA store. Only at the brick-and-mortar store could the shopper purchase the item and either take it home themselves or schedule home delivery.

With the new app, however, shoppers can now purchase directly on the app, similar to how other online shopping apps work. There’s a cart button and a checkout button, and just like buying at the store, IKEA also offers in-store pickup or home delivery.

Coppola says, “People who go to the stores might want to access the full range of IKEA, and that is when digital innovations come in handy.”
