IKEA Is 3D Printing Gaming Chairs

As someone who sits for hours on end with a controller in my hands, I could really use an ergonomic seating arrangement. Gaming is a very tailbone-intensive hobby, and a lot of quote unquote “gaming chairs” aren’t particularly impressive. Ever the furniture innovators, IKEA has an idea cooking that could be beneficial for folks like me.

IKEA has teamed up with the eSports company Area Academy and the custom medical prosthetic firm UNYQ to create the ultimate gaming chair. Their weapons of choice for this undertaking are body scanners and 3D printers.

The game plan is to scan a customer’s body, and then craft a series of cushions and pads to their exact dimensions before attaching them to a special chair frame designed to hold them. They’ve already got a physical prototype: a white swivel stool with two indents for cushions.

The cushions were created by taking detailed scans of a test subject’s butt. A good start, but we’re gonna need some back support, too. IKEA is planning to make this line commercially available in 2020.
