Huawei May Release $600 5G Smartphone

Huawei is certainly never one to be outdone.

The 5G race is still going strong, especially with Verizon’s recent launch of its 5G networks. However, with barely any 5G-capable phones on the market, especially not one that is suitable for most budgets, many are finding it hard to feel excited about the 5G innovation.

Enter Huawei, who is currently planning to release a 5G smartphone that costs a mere $600, or about half of what other brands are asking for their own 5G enabled devices.

Huawei’s chief marketing officer of wireless marketing, Peter Zhou, said in a Thursday interview with Financial Times that the company may release 5G phones to the market this year for $600. Zhou believes it may even drop further by 2020, saying, “Next year, some people say we may see [5G] smartphones at $300 and I think that’s very much possible.”

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G, in comparison, will cost over $1200 upon release. Apple hasn’t announced its 5G enabled phone yet, but it’s sure to cost around the same as Samsung as well.

The attractive pricing for Huawei’s products is one of the main reasons why the company still manages to consistently top the mobile market, despite facing several issues in various spots around the world because of alleged security risks.
