Huawei Hit With Fraud Charges

Huawei has been in hot water for quite some time now, after facing several allegations from the United States of America, one of which is in regards to the safety and security of using Huawei with the United States’ 5G infrastructure.

Unfortunately for the Chinese telecommunications company, the Justice Department unveiled 2 indictments against them on Monday, with thirteen charges filed in New York and another 10 filed in Washington, including several counts of “bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.” The charges included T-Mobile’s accusation that Huawei stole the designs for the robotic hand used by the American company to test new smartphone devices.

Huawei denied the allegations, saying that they did not commit any of the asserted violations. A spokesperson for the company said it was “disappointed to learn of the charges brought against the company.”

The company insisted that it had already settled its IP theft dispute with T-Mobile in 2017 regarding the allegation over an experimental robotics technology. Known as Tappy, the device was “designed to mimic human fingers and was used to test smartphones that were in production,” Sky News reports.

Wary of the allegations, FBI director Christopher Wray said the US must “consider carefully the risks that companies like Huawei pose if we allow them into our telecommunications infrastructure”.

A Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesperson from China has described the indictments as “unfair and immoral” and has called on Washington to “stop the unreasonable crackdown” on Huawei and other Chinese companies on Tuesday.
