Go With The Flow And Forget The Phone

Today’s world revolves around the use of our smart phones and devices in order to function on a daily basis. But when is it time to say “enough is enough” and put the phone down? With a growing number of apps now monitoring your screen time and reminding you when that number reaches abnormal highs, here are some tips to get off your smart phone. Even a tech website needs a break sometimes.

The best way to combat overuse of electronics is to achieve something that’s called the “flow state.” A Hungarian-American psychologist coined the phrase in 1990, and in some ways, it can be compared to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Flow state involves finding an activity or hobby, preferably one that keeps you out of reach of your phone, and participating in it to the point that you forget your phone exists.

You can get so immersed in doing what you love that your phone becomes a lower priority. Time tracking app Moment, a recent download of myself, shows that the average person spends around 4 hours on their phone. Not only is that a large portion of our day, but that only accounts for phone screen use, not other technology use. By having an app tell you each day how much more or less you’re using your phone compared to the previous day, it makes you more conscious of your technology usage.
