How else can we wear speakers in our ears? Ask Apple.

Apple has revolutionized so many areas of technology that it is no surprise that their new headphones are going to be something we have never seen before.

Apple has filed a patent for headphones that will be over-the-ear with a foldable headband. They are equipped with orientation detection that will adjust the left/right audio channels depending on how the wearer is using them.

The new design would have the headphones positioned at the top of the earpiece and slide inside instead of the traditional external component that lies just outside of it. The orientation sensor also comes with a mechanism that flattens the headband against the earpiece for portability. Standby mode would be activated if they detected that the headphones were not being worn over the ears.

The headphones will be able to maximize the wearer’s comfort, making sure they’re comfortable, not too bulky, and fit the user’s ears to maximize the sound quality.

The concept is in the patent stage and there is no guarantee, even with a patent, that Apple will manufacture these headphones. If they do, though, you can expect the portable speaker market to completely change.
