Yes, really.

Any gamer worth their salt has booted up Final Fantasy VII at least once in their lives. It has gone down in history as one of the most beloved JRPGs, and likely one of the most beloved games, ever made, but I probably didn’t have to tell you that. It’d have to be one of the most beloved games for Square Enix’s upcoming remake, titled Final Fantasy VII Remake, to still be accruing hype despite being in the oven for almost five years. But for those of you who have held on tight, your patience may soon be rewarded.

Square Enix dropped a trailer at E3 earlier this week, and alongside that, officially announced the game’s final release date: March 3, 2020. Now, this isn’t the first inkling of release this game has had, but hopefully, this one will be set in stone. Square Enix said as much during their E3 presentation proper.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, this remake will feature the same general story and setting as the original Final Fantasy VII, but brand new 4K graphics and a completely rebuilt combat system. The remake will be more of a hands-on action RPG in a similar vein to Final Fantasy XV or Kingdom Hearts, employing an interesting blend of real time combat and the original’s classic active time battle (or ATB) system. Magic, Summons and Limit Breaks will also still be a thing, accomplished via expending bars on the special ATB meter. Oh boy, I can’t wait for a 4K Omnislash…
