Facial Recognition Is Keeping Airports Safer

Advancements in cyber security are making their way to airports, and within three days of installation, the machines are already excelling at their job. New biometric scanners were introduced at the Washington Dulles International Airport. These scanners used facial recognition to match the physical characteristics of people entering the U.S. with their presented passport in order to make sure it was the same person.

Despite the system being in early test phases, the scan successfully picked up differences between a man’s face and the photo on the passport he was using. The man, who was detained by security, had presented a French passport after flying in from Brazil. It turned out that he was actually from the Republic of Congo according to his real I.D. that was hiding in his shoe.

Terrorists and criminals are always trying to find creative ways to smuggle themselves into the country, but with adapting and growing technology, it’s always going to make that venture harder and harder. Facial recognition is just the first step in verifying identities of those entering the U.S., and we can look forward to these scans helping to keep the country safer as they’re introduced to more airports in the coming years.
