Facebook is Getting a Massive Design Overhaul

Facebook is going in for a massive design overhaul, reportedly in order to move away from the traditional News Feed timeline. This is going to be its first major redesign ever since the platform was founded 15 years ago.

Aside from superficial changes such as the logo getting changed to a circle instead of a square and the blue bar disappearing at the top, Facebook would also be changing the platform’s cornerstone features. According to the social media company’s announcement, its main mobile application will be putting more emphasis on what it thinks is its two most important features: groups and events.

Facebook says that this is because the company believes that users are benefiting from these two features the most, considering that most users are going to Facebook in order to talk with other people connected to them, i.e. groups, and checking out upcoming meetings and celebrations, i.e. events.

“There are tens of millions of active groups on Facebook,” the company says in its official announcement. “When people find the right one, it often becomes the most meaningful part of how they use Facebook. And today, more than 400 million people on Facebook belong to a group that they find meaningful. With this in mind, we’re rolling out a fresh new design for Facebook that’s simpler and puts your communities at the center.”

In support of this, Facebook is moving the groups tab right in the center of the redesigned menu bar at the bottom. Tapping on this would bring users to a more personalized feed. It’s kind of similar to how it was before, except this time, it will focus only on groups that the user is a member of.

Facebook adds, “We’re also introducing new tools that will help make it easier for you to discover and engage with groups of people who share your interests.”

The new redesign has already started rolling out on various iOS and Android devices all over the world. The desktop redesign, on the other hand, won’t come until a few months.
