Facebook F8 2018 Conference: Day 1

New policies and features for Facebook are announced today at the Facebook F8 Conference. The keynote speech by founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, ensures new security protocols and dating feature.

Facebook will be adding a new feature called the ‘Clear History’ option, allowing users to see and delete their browsing history from analytic tools. This topic is vital for Facebook due to the recent congressional hearings regarding their privacy policy for users.

The terms and conditions policy allows Facebook to use material that is posted by members, meaning they can sell this information to third-party buyers for ad-targeting purposes.

Zuckerberg speaks of data privacy in regards to Cambridge Analytica, saying that an app developer took data that was shared and sold it.

Another security measure is through developing artificial intelligence tools to identify fake accounts and cases of election interference.

Facebook is announcing new features to enhance the social experience of the platform. The new dating opt-in feature was described by Zuckerberg as, ‘a way to develop deeper connections, instead of hookups’.

This announcement can reflect on the dropping of the Match.com stock value, opening at $47.03/share and closing at $36.71/share.

Another new feature is Watch Party, where a group can lives-stream videos and comment in a similar format of Facebook Live. Zuckerberg played a joke during his keynote, showing an example for the Watch Party option with a featured video from his recent congressional hearing.

The announcement of these features bring hope that Facebook is re-configuring to be more true to their original initiative, to create a space for people to freely connect.
