Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Will Attend Security Briefing After NZ Shooting

Homeland Security is looking for solutions to keep a web-wide incident like Christchurch from reoccurring.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is being asked to attend a security briefing along with other tech CEOs after the terrorist shootings at two Muslim mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The entire attack was broadcasted live on Facebook by the terrorist himself, totaling 17 minutes worth of footage. This led to several social media platforms including Twitter, YouTube, and of course, Facebook, scrambling to eradicate the disturbing video from their websites.

Chairman of US Committee on Homeland Security, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, says in a letter, “This video was widely available on your platforms well after the attack, despite calls from New Zealand authorities to take these videos down.” He also added that the viral video may inspire ‘copycats’ who are attracted to videos depicting acts of terrorism.

The letter was sent to CEOs of various tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, and YouTube on Monday. The letter is requesting a security briefing to be held on March 27th.

“You must do better,” the letter added. “It is clear from the recent pattern of horrific mass violence and thwarted attempts at mass violence — here and abroad — that this is not merely an American issue but a global one.”
