Chikorita Blossoms Into September

As one of the most underrated and under powerful starter Pokémon of any generation, Chikorita has received a bad rep from a lot of Pokéfans. Regardless, Niantic Labs has decided to dedicate the month of September to this lovely green pocket monster, as September 22nd will be Chikorita’s time to shine on Community Day.

Each month, Pokémon Go dedicates three hours on the weekend towards a new Pokémon. They have increased spawn rates, you get three times the experience points for all catches, and there’s an increased chance to find a rare shiny version of that Pokémon. Chikorita has a nice autumn themed vibe as its alternate coloration, making it a great Pokémon to celebrate the transition from summer to autumn.

The Johto region of Pokémon was introduced a long time ago, but it looks like we will be getting the starters from Professor Elm’s region as Community Day highlights for the rest of the year. My guess would be that October would focus a Ghost type to celebrate Halloween, have Cyndiquil make an appearance in November, and Totodile come up December (if not, Delibird).

The great thing about Community Day is you get to see so many groups of people come together and wander around, all reveling in the number of rare Pokémon they have caught. While it hasn’t been revealed what special move Meganium will learn when it is evolved from Chikorita during this three hour window, I guarantee it won’t be strong enough to make it competitively viable. Regardless, any collector will want a batch of these shinies before the event ends.
