Apple Recalls Some MacBook Pros Due to Battery Issues

A designer laptop isn’t worth an exploding battery.

As if the bevy of the MacBook’s keyboard problems wasn’t bad enough, Apple is once again faced with an issue with its premium laptops. Recently, the company had to announce a recall for some defective MacBook Pro units, apparently due to potentially hazardous batteries.

Apple wrote the following in its support page:

“Apple has determined that, in a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units, the battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. Affected units were sold primarily between September 2015 and February 2017 and product eligibility is determined by the product serial number. Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to replace affected batteries, free of charge.”

Although Apple says that only a “limited number” of MacBooks are affected, the fact that the company ships around 18M units per year is already alarming enough. For all we know, a “limited number” to the company could be around 100,000, which is definitely problematic enough.

If you have a mid-2015 model 15-inch MacBook Pro and you’re worried that you might have gotten a defective unit, you can enter your laptop’s serial number on this page to determine whether you’re eligible for the program.
