Andrew Cuomo Not Giving Up On Amazon’s New York City Headquarters

Less than a month ago, Amazon was met with a lot of opposition when it announced its choice of location for its new headquarters: the city that never sleeps, New York City.

Hundreds of activists protested against the announcement, citing reasons such as gentrification as well as the huge tax incentives that the city offered Amazon in order to build its headquarters in NYC for their protest. Due to this, Amazon eventually backed out from the project, leaving plenty of other people, especially local government officers who lobbied for the project, disappointed and upset at the outcome.

One of these people is New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who has reportedly pleaded Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos many times to reconsider the company’s decision. “State Senate made a terrible blunder,” says Cuomo’s spokesperson in a statement to CNBC. “Everyone, including their members, knows it — and 75 percent of New Yorkers affirmed it; the Governor will take over the process and can comfortably assure Amazon the approval will get done.”

Aside from Cuomo, a handful of other companies, including Mastercard, Goldman Sachs, and Ford are also asking Amazon to change its mind regarding the new headquarters. An open letter supposed to be published in New York Times made its way to Amazon executives last week. The letter contained multiple New-York based businesses, unions, and groups expressing their support for the project.

Amazon has not yet responded for comment.
