Alibaba Criticizes US Treatment Of Huawei

Alibaba executive vice-chairman Joe Tsai criticized the United States of America’s treatment of China’s Huawei Technologies regarding the strict market policies on Huawei products as well as what he called “an attempt by the US government to curb China’s rise via a trade war.”

Reuters reported on Friday that Tsai claims that the United States’ efforts to restrict Huawei’s presence in the country was “very politically motivated.” He says at the Reuters BreakingViews event in Hong Kong, “I think what the American government and together with the Five Eyes Alliance – what they’re trying to do with Huawei – is a bit unfair, there’s definitely a political agenda behind it.”

Recently, the US announced its allegations that Huawei’s products can be used by China for espionage. The Chinese tech giant, however, continues to deny this allegation.

Tsai also has an optimistic view of China’s economy despite its current slowdown, saying that it still remains “fundamentally strong.” Aside from the looming trade war, Tsai claims that people are in fact over-worried about China’s economy. The senior executive says that “consumption in China is going to grow over the next 5-10 years.”

With regards to Alibaba, Tsai says that the company will “continue to invest aggressively despite the uncertain business environment.”
